Man City were said to be linked with Tottenham’s England right-back Kyle Walker. That was prior to Thursday’s derby. Word has it that they have links with team mate left-back Danny Rose.
Although these two positions undoubtedly look like two areas that will interest Guardiola in the summer, the odds of signing the two players are very low.
Manchester City have gifted defenders in those positions who have served extremely well. Unfortunately, all of them are coming closer to the end of their careers.
Pablo Zabaleta is yet another fabulous City player but is now 32. Aleksandar Kolarov and Gael Clichy are both 31 now, while Bacary Sagna is 34. Young blood and renewal is required urgently in this area.
John Stones’ introduction has been tough since his £47.5m transfer from Everton. However, he has the potential to become a premier Manchester City central defender for many years.
The 31-year old captain Vincent Kompay’s present return to tip-top shape and fitness, outstanding against Man United is a plus. If Kompay stays fit, he can actually save Man City a lot. Nicholas Otamendi’s shape however is a cause for concern, meaning there is the likelihood that Guardiola is seeking central defensive reinforcements.
On watching the Manchester derby as a BBC Sport commentator, former England forward Chris Waddle had this to say: “It is easy to see what the biggest thing is that needs to change for City to get closer to winning the title. Their defence.
“That starts with the goalkeeper. Whether Pep Guardiola likes Bravo or not, I don’t think he is the top-class keeper you need to win the league and neither is Caballero.
He went on: “I know he wants someone there who can use the ball with his feet and play the way he wants, but he also has to be able to stop the ball from going in the net because they concede too many goals.

“He also needs three defenders – a centre-back and two full-backs.”
