With Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta are also out of contract next summer and Clichys contract ending at the end of this season. City will be keen to move for several new defenders in the coming years.
Portuguese Defender Alex Grimaldo who plays for Benfica is the perfect answer. he came through the Barcelona set up so is already on Pep’s transfer watch list. At 21 he is the perfect age to come through the City Team and bolster a position for the next 6 to 7 years. He will not come cheaply however as Benfica will ask upwards of £40m after paying Barcelona just £1.4m a few years ago has a release clause of an eye watering £51m.
Alex became the youngest player ever in Spain’s second division in 2011 while coming on for the Barca B team aged just 15 years and 349 days. In 2013 he suffered a serious knee injury and Barcelona did not want to risk keeping him so sold him for a cut price fee to Benfica.
