According to reports on Friday by L’Equipe, Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy has informed club leaders and coach Leonardo Jardim about his plans to switch to Manchester City.
It is an open secret that Man City is interested in the 22-year-old French international. Although there have been several reports indicating that a deal was either close or sealed, Mendy is still a Monaco player.
Chelsea and Liverpool have also shown their interest in signing him but the player clarified that his only wish is to join Manchester City this summer.
Monaco has maintained that Mendy will stick at the club next season and their position can only be changed if they are given an “exceptional offer”. Mendy’s actions on Friday could be viewed as a clever and fast way of pushing through a deal.
The two clubs have reputedly been in constant touch from the time they discussed Bernard Silva’s transfer to the Etihad earlier this summer. However, further talks have been ongoing in regards to a deal for the top-rated Mendy. He is among those players who charmed as Monaco bundled Manchester City out of Champions League last season.
Monaco and Manchester City are likely to reach a compromise. The hope hinges on the fact that Mendy is urging them on. The principality club value the player between €40million and €45million (£35million – £39.5million).
