Pep Guardiola has been quoted saying that the club ‘’will try” to sign a central defender during this season.

With Eliaquim Mangala expected to leave, City will be left with Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones as its reliable centre-backs. Guardiola, who has already spent a considerable sum this summer spoke before City’s friendly match with Tottenham and was quoted saying: “We don’t have too much more to spend but we are going to see.”

Out of the approximately £200m that City has spent this summer, slightly over £120m was on three full-backs. Last week, three players moved to Manchester City; Kyle Walker from Spurs for £45m, Danillo from Real Madrid for £26.5m, while Benjamin Mendy was hired from Monaco for £52m.

The trio join 2 other players who arrived earlier this summer at City – Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva and Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson Moraes who were signed for £43m and £35m respectively.
The club has also been linked with moves of two other players: Arsenal’s Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez plus another Monaco player, teenage striker Kylian Mbappe who is rated at £160m.
But Guardiola was tight-lipped when asked questions about the two players. All he could say was that “they are Arsenal and Monaco players”.
